was held in Barcelona from June 18th to 20th at the FCRI (Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació), bringing together all the Consortium teams for the final result presentation. This event marks the end of QUALI-DEC, an international scientific research project that has lasted more than five years in four target countries (Argentina, Burkina Faso, Thailand and Vietnam) aimed at reducing the practice of medically unnecessary caesarean sections and promoting informed choice of mode of delivery.
Teams from Argentina, Burkina Faso, Thailand, Vietnam, Ireland, France, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain gathered in Barcelona for a retrospective and presentation of their work: a human adventure in a scientific project that began five years ago, co-funded by the EU and the WHO.
In response to the key question: ‘Is it possible to reduce caesarean sections in low- and middle-income countries?’, three days of intense exchanges, collective work, discussion and presentation of the results of the implementation of the QUALI-DEC intervention in the four countries targeted by the project took place. Between plenary sessions and workshops, the common objective is to produce (for publication) nearly 12 scientific articles covering the main themes related to the project:
– Effectiveness Evaluation
– Use of algorithms
– Knowledge transfer plan
– Knowledge score
– Process Evaluation
– Decision Making
– Effects of the DAT tool
– Birth of experience and satisfaction with care…
On the last day, there was also an opportunity to exchange views with healthcare professionals from several hospitals belonging to the Catalan Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, who shared their field experience in the areas of childbirth and maternal and child health: a wonderful opportunity to share expertise, models and concepts with a view to improving patient care, care for their babies and decision-making on the mode of delivery. This was followed by high-level discussions and exchanges on the topic of caesarean sections in connection with the QUALI-DEC project…
This GA was a unique opportunity to promote knowledge in order to guide, inform and change the mindsets of healthcare professionals and policy makers to serve the health of pregnant women and contribute to reducing unnecessary caesarean sections in low- and middle-income countries!
